A carburetor is an important part of the pressure washer. It’s responsible for mixing air and fuel in just the proper ratio to produce power. When it gets dirty, it can cause problems with your pressure washer’s performance.
While using a pressure washer to wash your car, you should first learn how to clean your carburetor.

Signs that your pressure washer's carburetor is clogged
Your engine won't start
This is the most obvious sign that something is wrong with the carburetor on your pressure washer. There’s no use trying to fix anything else when this happens because the problem lies in the fuel system itself.
The engine runs but doesn't produce any power.
Another common issue caused by a dirty carburetor is when an engine will run but not produce any power or torque.
Your machine sputters as if gas isn't getting through
Sometimes dirt and debris can clog up small holes inside a nozzle, which prevents gasoline from passing through properly and causes major issues for machines like pressure washers that rely on gasoline as their primary energy source.
You notice white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe
White smoke coming out of an exhaust pipe means one thing – water vaporized during combustion has been mixed into the air/fuel mixture, causing incomplete combustion, leading to carbon monoxide being released into the atmosphere instead of carbon dioxide (which we breathe).
You smell raw gasoline near where you store your equipment
A strong gasoline smell means that it’s time to clean out the carburetor on your pressure washer. If you don’t, raw gas will continue to leak into the engine and cause damage over time. It also increases the risk of an explosion or fire in your garage or shop!
Steps for Cleaning Carburetor on the Pressure Washer
Remove All Parts From The Engine
- Remove everything off your pressure washer so that you don’t get any parts stuck under the hood when removing the carburetor later! Start by unscrewing the bottom cap of the tank valve.
- Next, turn off the water supply line before pulling the intake manifold completely free of the pump housing. Once the intake manifold has been removed, disconnect the electrical connector as well.
- Now that the components have been disconnected put them aside until further instructions are given. You’ll need these things back once you’re done with your cleaning procedure. Once the intake manifold is pulled away from the pump, open up the throttle body cover next. This is done by lifting the handle on top of the throttle body and sliding it towards the side of the machine.
- Now grab the two bolts holding the throttle body together and pull upwards. Once the throttle body is released, take note of where the hose attaches to the throttle body. Make sure to save those hoses incase something goes wrong during cleaning.
- Then undo the bolt securing the throttle body onto its bracket. Once undone, slide the throttle body down and set it on the ground.
- Next, release the safety switch located near the front of the throttle body. Slide it forward towards the end of the shaft and lift the spring-loaded lever. When finished, return the safety switch to its original position.
- Finally, replace the bolt securing the throttle plate assembly onto the throttle body. Tighten both screws firmly.
Disconnect Hose And Connect Air Filter To Tank Valve
After completing step 1, reconnect the exhaust pipe using the same method described above. After doing so, connect the hose directly to the tank valve and tighten the connection securely.
Next, place the air filter over the inlet port of the tank valve. Do not forget to screw the metal ring around the hole tight enough to hold the air filter in place. Since the tank valve has no threads, make sure to push the rubber ring inside tightly.
Otherwise, the air filter may fall off while working on the carburetor.Finally, turn the regulator knob clockwise to fill the tank with fresh air. Turn counterclockwise to let go of the excess air after filling the tank.
If there is a problem with the air filter or the tank valve at any time, simply repeat this entire process again.
Take the Carburetor Apart
It’s easy to take the carburetor apart and clean yourself! You don’t need any special tools – just a flathead screwdriver will do the trick. Take out all of the screws on top of your carburetor cover before removing it from your machine completely.
Then use a soft brush to gently remove dirt built up inside your carburetor over time. Be sure not to damage any parts while cleaning! Once you have finished brushing away dirt, put everything back together in reverse order so that you can get back out there and start using your pressure washer again!
Use the Carburetor Cleaner
Use a carburetor cleaner and spray it into the carburetor. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then, spray it out with water from your garden hose. This should get rid of any dirt or grime that has built up in there over time. You can also use an old toothbrush if needed to scrub away any stubborn spots!
After everything has been cleaned and put back in its proper location, all you have to do now is reassemble the carburetor in the order you took it apart. As a guide, use the photographs you took previously.
